DOGE Fan Elon Musk Announces New Feature For Twitter

Elon Musk announced on Saturday that his recently acquired Twitter would offer a new “higher priced” Blue subscription that would remove advertisements from the microblogging platform. Although this feature has not yet been implemented, the existing $7.99 per month Twitter Blue subscription provides 50% fewer advertisements when compared to “non-verified persons.”

Twitter’s New Blue Plan

It’s possible that Elon’s solution to Blue’s low membership numbers and the 40% drop in ad revenue, which CoinGape has already reported, is to offer a more expensive but ad-free subscription. Musk claims that Twitter is also working on a mechanism to reduce the frequency and size of advertisements displayed on the platform.

The Dogecoin aficionado was quoted as saying:

“Ads are too frequent on Twitter and too big. Taking steps to address both in coming weeks”

Although the billionaire has not made the new pricing public, industry experts believe it will be in the $15-$16 range. The existing Blue subscription includes benefits such as a blue “verified” checkmark, the ability to undo tweets, the ability to submit longer 1080p videos, a thread reader mode, and preferential ranking in conversations. All these features are available for an additional $8 fee.

Twitter’s Attempt To Monetize

Musk has been working to diversify the company’s economy away from advertising revenue since acquiring the platform in October. He is counting on revenue from “Twitter Blue” memberships to help him achieve this goal. Twitter currently charges a $3 premium to Blue sign-ups that originate from iOS or Android smartphones to compensate for the commission that Apple and Google take from in-app purchases.

Blue has been available as a paid subscription on iOS for $11 per month since its relaunch in December. Twitter began offering Blue to Android users for the same price on Thursday. There is also the option of purchasing a one-year subscription for the discounted price of $84.
